I’ve always thought monuments like Stonehenge were a tribute to the priest class. They claimed to have the answers no one else could fathom, and so they were afforded the sites and the manpower to create henges or portals to the supposed afterlife. They played perhaps on people’s innermost fears, just as televangelists today soak the fearful and the weak for their money on a promise for a ticket to heaven. It’s the oldest scam in human civilization.

The pilot test of the guaranteed annual income in Manitoba, Canada produced many interesting and unexpected results, including a sudden and drastic drop in hospital ER visits, doctors visits and other medical complaints. Lots of working adults decided to go to night school and earn a second degree, leading to better job prospects with higher pay rates. Many people spent quality time with their children and families. People were less sick overall. They were happier and had goals in their life they could finally act on to improve their station in life. And almost no one “sat on their couch” at home “drinking beer” and watching hockey, contrary to the lies propagated by many Republicans and Conservative pundits. Basically, people were given a fighting chance at life. And they took it.
