  1. Bahmut — it is from name Mahmud, Turkish variant of name Muhammed, so this word also sounds exotic in Russian. City founded in 1570s by tsar Ivan IV (in english known as “Ivan the Terrible”) as borderland castle against Turkish forces and got name by name of river (while river itself looks like got name in honor of some Mahmud / Muhammed). Better to call city Artemovsk, city got this name back in 1924 in honor of comrade Artem, he founded Soviet republic from whole Donbas region, which later was joined to Soviet Ukraine by Lenin. City was renamed against wish of people soon after coup in 2015 as part of so-called ‘decommunization’.

  2.  @Stop-and-listen  What means “never will know”? 😮 Actually exist lists of people, they are referenced in hundreds different lists (got wears, ammunition, food, got position in army, registered in some group, moved from point A to B, got injured/cured, got orders and so on). It is known exactly numbers of troops for some battles from medieval times when fought against Mongolians (regards to exactly similar lists which left till our days), while now in 21 century it is much easier. Moreover, Russia (Donetsk Republic actually, but now it is irrelevant) made DNA base of all bodies. If they were not sputtering into atoms (rare cases), then they all registered in database.
