@Nnn-j7q False. After first coup in 2004 Yushenko added in military doctrine of country so-called strategic goal — join into NATO. In 2008 on conference of NATO in Bucharest everyone await that country will get official invite, but yep, few EU countries were against because asked before for several reforms. They were not against of process, they asked for additional reforms (actually just to get more control over local authorities, EU just wanted own part of pie). So instead was signed separate agreement where declared that UA will do this reforms and join later.
In 2014 nothing was over, new forced declared about join to NATO publicly, one of reason for coup. US senators, like McCain right from Kiew during coup publicly promised to remove Russian fleet and finish with Russia next.
while situation in Crime itself have different story:
1) Police forces which protected Kiev after coup went to Crimea. People there meet them with applauds.
2) On TV regime promised to clear Crimea from ethnical Russians (almost whole local population). So from one side people organized own militia and protected railroad stations, border and airport. From other side government (I remind it was republic, with own separate authorities) asked help of Moscow. Separately president also asked Russian help (and not just about Crimea, about whole country, so de jure Russia have right to do in UA anything; Russia rejected because not wanted big blood — it was wrong decision as we know now, it would be less).
Russia not sent any military, it forces based there already for hundreds years. Was used local forces, they just blocked UA forces. UA had much more forces, but they almost immediately preferred to join to Russian forces.
