You so naive. Politics — it is synonym for national interests. Are you forgot how after dissolve of USSR, India bought in Russia development of whole space industry for self (Russia was weak and then it cost almost nothing, just tens billions for all technologies). And how Americans forced Yeltsin to cancel already signed deal, because they not wanted someone else got modern space industry.
Nowadays, just two month ago US signed with small bunch of countries (e.g. such “great” space country as Liechtenstein) agreement about resource gathering on Moon. What the catch, resources in space are public? In agreement they described that have right to protect territories around from enemies. It is translated as “we want to declare lands on Moon as own property, formally it will be public, but actually it will be borders under protection of weapons”. They planned it already for years, so from 2017 Russia and China was forced to unite own moon programs. Yep, both also will stake out the territory, it is not about fake gathering of resources on Moon or some science. It is about national interests and security.

No, they was freaks. Regards to that China survived and became so brilliant. For comparison in USSR similar freaks came to power. In result whole country gone, died dozens million of people, was launched several civil wars, some still on, returned famine, whole industries gone, space exploration and a lot of rest modern technologies (e.g. airplanes on hydrogen) was thrown back for decades, world became much worse, whole countries were erased because disappeared power which could protect them, whole regions now in fire.

@Logos-Nomos Russians officially helped with some technologies, Chinese not stole anything, you lie. Moreover, such complicated technologies just impossibly to stole or reproduce. As example rocket engines RD-180 which Russians sold to USA, Americans even bought blueprints, but failed to repeat that engines because have no access to scientists and alloys, so even blueprints are useless. Or methane engine which they got from Russia back in 90s, how many years passed until they made own copy. Also it is explains why Russian president publicly proposed to USA buy hypersonic missiles from Russia, it is such complicated technology that nobody afraid USA will repeat it, it is just impossibly. And it is explained why Americans rejected from proposal to buy missiles, but at same time tried to buy scientists which developed missiles (one of them just died several days ago in prison).

More likely special (and secret) alloys. Russians did similar experiments on space station MIR back in 1990s, they tried to build refrigerator for powerful nuclear reactors in space. It is key problem for reactors.
Everyone know that in space is cold, but actually everything is not so simple. In space there are no environment, as result nothing can accept your heat regards to environment. So, if you are produce some heat (like powerful nuclear reactor), then you have no possibilities to spread heat somewhere, in result you melt yourself. So Russians invented some secret alloys and built special shower. Shower spread dozens thousands of drops, while they flying in open space, they partly vaporized and lose heat, then they captured and reflow back to reactor for next cycle. In result such system allow to cool down any reactor. But it is very complicated system. Later Russia invented some new kind of material (unknown kind) which incredible effectively can radiate heat as waves. So possibly to build special panels instead such complicated system as shower with thousands of drops. But panels of course have own limitations, they not so effective as drops of liquid alloys, but for nearest future they are enough (can spread up to 4 MWh of heat energy, far beyond of modern needs).
