US had access to that part of world, so could launch missiles against Russia from close distance, while Russians were forced to launch missiles from far distance. Of course here is need to note what liquid fuel means — it is not modern hydrogen, oxygen and rest useless stuff. It is complicated and very dangerous liquids. As example instead of oxygen — liquid fluorine. 2. Less expensive. Solid fuels more expensive.
