I went to college in 2000 (as programmer). XML was not a thing at all, just even never mentioned (maybe I forgot of course, in whole my rest life never had worked with it). But we had subject of neutral networks for two semesters (obligatory, we have no optional courses as in anglo-saxon’s education system).
It was explained that this is future. Lessons started from history of OGAS ("National Automated System for Computation and Information Processing"), ancient Soviet project to create a nationwide information network where grids and AI control and rule with state economy. Bureaucrats buried project because afraid of own replacement, so survived only system Perimeter which arrived in 1970s — AI which control all nukes and can launch them by own decision.
Importance of lessons was presented as "you are new generation which must bring this project to life". Whole course mainly was around math, the most complicated from which we had (more complicated I later met only in university, but already as not programmer, it was course around misc nuclear tech stuff). And yep, we also coded misc fun things like recognition of objects and so on.
Later, on my first job in late 2000s I programmed autonomous computer vision for drone (patrol which control ships on sea), thanks to this courses.
