  2. Mathematics that has no use? Rather hubristic to think that someone can look at mathematics and deduce which will have applications in the future. Your effort to determine some method to assess what mathematics will be of use sounds alot like the Halting Problem for Turing Machine which is the same as the Incompleteness Theorems in mathematics. There are a number of Incompleteness Theorems in Mathematics, such as for recursive functions, the Lambda calculus and Post Production system. The fact that these Incompleteness Theorems appear in multiple apparently unrelated areas of mathematics has been likened to a fundamental property like natural numbers. All of this prior to the invention of electronic computers. Who knows what might come of the current mathematical studies in Category Theory? Many people would suggest that Category Theory is a pointless undertaking because Category Theory studies the structures of mathematical systems. Just imagine what some people would say about a branch of mathematics that studies mathematics? This the kind of navel gazing that people like to dismiss in until it finds an application and then it was useful after all.
