Trump wants tariffs because they are a regressive tax just as sales taxes that everyone who buys something pays whether that person are rich or poor. The rich can afford the higher prices because the higher price is a smaller fraction of their spending than it will be on poorer and less weslthy people. Trump will then use the revenue from the tariffs to offset tax cuts that benefit the wealthy. Tariffs are a mechanism to enrich wealthy people at the expense of people who have wealth. Tariffs are a mechanism of wealth transfer from the poor to the rich. Trump understands that very well, and supports. He simply lies about as a means of deception as opposed to a lack of understanding. I wish people would attribute Trump's lies to malice and motive rather than ignorance. Trump is a grifter and more clever than the marks, the American people, who he cheats.

@CLS-m3j yes, we need to be careful to distinguish between ignorance and stupidity. Someone who is ignorant can change that by learning what you did not know. However, nothing can fix stupidity. Trump is ignorant, but he is not stupid. He has the low cunning of a con man and grifter.
