  1. The Netherlands has pumps of sufficient strength and capacity to keep the coolant ponds full by pumping even from the lowered Dneipro level. Of course the pumps need to get there and installed. The Dutch are very efficient and fast but they do need lead time. I have wondered if they are ready to go when they can do it without danger of the Russians shooting at them. At this point I think that NATO along with China could issue an ultimatum to Russia. The Netherlands could even invite the Chinese to join them.

  3.  @ericp1139  Putin has pursued a policy to eradicate Ukrainian culture in favor of Russian "culture" and if necessary to drive all Ukrainians out of their country. and making a large portion of Ukraine uninhabitable serves that objective. In addition if a large portion of the grain producing region of Ukraine is useless for any farming then the value of Russian wheat increases. Any radiation leak from the nuclear plant will also travel down the Dneipro and could make Port facilities in a Kherson and Odessa sufficiently radioactive that it would deny Ukraine the ability to ship products to the Black Sea through those ports. Finally, it follows with a long historical attitude of Russian society that if they can't have it then they will make sure nobody can. A form of that reasoning goes all the back to Ivan the Terrible who first declared himself Tsar of Russia. When St. Basil's cathedral was finished, Ivan considered the cathedral so beautiful that he had the architect blinded so he could never create for anybody else another cathedral so beautiful.
