Current events differ greatly from that because the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth had been weakened by series of preceding wars, One consequence of Polish Lithuanian including Western Ukraine was the influence of the Polish language on Russian which created the Ukrainian language such that speakers of Ukrainian can understand some Polish and can easily understand Russian whereas native Russian speaker have great difficulty understanding Ukrainian. The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was remarkable because it united two separate Grand Duchies with very different languages into a single political entity. The Polish Lithuanian also distributed political power up and down the social layers of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. By contrast, Russia has never been anything other than an autocracy in which Tsar owed all the land and without anything like a landed gentry. Historically Russia lacks any experience with a participatory government and regards all neighboring countries as potential enemies rather than potential allies.
