  1. The Japanese have shifted considerably in anticipation of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Japan has declared that they would consider an attack on Taiwan as an attack on Japan, and would respond as a measure of self-defense. Taiwan close to southern most islands of the Japanese archipelago, and a military build-up in the southern islands of Japan would be on Japan territory. However, Japan has gone much further this time, and engaged in joint military exercises with the US and UK including amphibious landings on islands, which means armed boots on the ground. The Japanese have also converted some ships to accommodate STOL of F-35 aircraft, making this the first time since the end of the Second World War that Japan has ships that will accommodate the take-off and landing of fixed wing aircraft even if those aircraft only need very short runways. China's increasing military activities and pressure from the US has pushed Japan into much more military activity.
