The objective of the price cap on gas is to constrain revenue to Russia. The fossil fuel is not a free market any more than the diamond market is. Both the fossil fuel market and the diamond market are controlled by cartels who set the price by controlling the supply. Putting price controls on a market that is controlled by a cartel constrains the power of the cartel. It is ludicrous to try to apply simple supply-demand economics to the energy market, and especially the fossil fuel market.
