  17. The UK should just give the Chagos Islands to the United States. It would save UK taxpayers 9 billion Pounds. Of course, if the UK wants to pay the 9 billion to the US instead of Mauritius for taking ownership of the islands, that too can be arranged. There might be an unresolved grievance some 2,000 Chagos islanders have primarily against the UK for booting them out of their island and relocating them to Mauritius many years ago, and that can be resolved independently by paying them damages or setting them up on several Chagos Islands, and some could even live on the big Chagos Island next to the US Naval Base if they don't mind all that traffic.

But common sense would hold that the only way an employee would (subsequent to leaving) compete with United would be if he/she started his/her own airline. A non-competition agreement would normally not apply to cases where the company discharged the employee, but I can see it being drafted so that a discharged employee would be held by the terms of the non-competition agreement absent of such a provision. In any case, most non-competition agreements specify geographic and time limits, which are difficult to enforce.

  33. The UAW doesn't understand that their workers will lose their jobs because of Biden's push for EVs. People don't want EVs and manufacturers are accordingly reducing production of EVs. The saving grace might be if automakers will be allowed to sell enough ICE and Hybrid cars in excess of Biden's quota (Hybrid here does not include plug-in Hybrids).

What they really want is to stop anyone from opposing their policies and actions, especially in public, which also means they want everyone to stop saying things they don't like. Free speech is under assault everywhere, and most countries have restrictions on free speech imposed by law or simply enforced by the police. The only country that can be said to have free speech is the USA, and even there governments and various institutions are doing their level best to restrict or censor it. (I don't know where Bhutan stands on this.)

Current AI gets its knowledge from what people posted on the Internet or another data base, but certain values are inserted in the AI by its programmers. That's why AI generates preposterous recommendations like the one earlier this year, where that particular AI preferred the end of the world rather than someone using the N when referring to black people. In any case, AI cannot abstract values from the Internet because they would conflict with each other as different people entering Internet content have different values. We can never use AI to tell us what we "should" do, because what a person should do depends on what he/she values, and that is outside of the purview of AI. The most that AI can do is to project what the probability is of a desired outcome given particular starting conditions (if we do this, then what happens?), and it is up to humans to decide whether they like that outcome and decide whether or not they should pursue the stated course of action.

So he arranged it so that his company couldn't pay, and he collected the million dollars which was the defined settlement under the terms of the insurance policy. So he earned a million dollars just like that. He was accused of cheating the insurance company. His defense: "I am not dealing with orphans and widows. Nor with teachers' unions or any unsophisticated people. These are ruthless businessmen and they should have been smarter. But they made a mistake and lost." A million is not much in Trump's world, but he made it without effort. So he took it.

  50. The Biden administration believes that driving the price of oil up will force Americans to abandon fossil fuel and switch to renewable energy sources. I think most reasonable people know that in order to do that, renewable energy has to perform as well as fossil fuels in terms of power, reliability (consistency of supply), and availability everywhere at all times. We all know that today, such a conversion would not be possible. Even Michael Moore knows that (I don't know if his movie about this is still available). It would require a truly revolutionary and miraculous advance in battery technology for even a partial conversion by 2050. I think the Biden administration believes in miracles. If tomorrow you shut down power generating plants (that run on fossil fuels) and outlawed the use of fossil fuels, the entire economy would just stop. The military and government would stop, as would almost all transportation. And Biden is trying to trigger this before we have viable renewable sources of energy.
