  1. She is very confused. Southern Italians were mixed with Arabs and that's what made their skin dark. Northern Italic tribes mixed with Germanic tribes and Celts, and so they remained mostly light skinned. Race can be identified very clearly by one's genes, and even skeletons where no skin remained can be identified as belonging to one race or another if viable DNA can be extracted. So race has not only a phenotypic reality (like skin or hair color) but a genetic one as well.
