It's the neoclassical model of perfect information taken at face value, with no caveats or asterisks, and made the centerpiece of an ideology. Of course, in reality, companies try very hard to hide information from consumers. Even if you were an expert on this or that, that multimillion or multibillion dollar company probably employs many people as smart or smarter whose job is to make sure you don't figure out what's defective, deleterious, pollutive, or poisonous about their product. Which doesn't address 1) some products are so cutting edge there won't be experts to judge the product or service, and 2) not even the company may know what's wrong.

Dude, you just need to be like an expert at everything to judge if you're getting ripped off (or put in mortal peril) or be able to pay several, dozens, hundreds of experts willing to make those determinations for you. Trust me, at a certain point competition will start kicking in and clear all this up.

@moebiusjdx7288 Case in point, Finland. One of if not the best school systems in the world. An instrumental part in getting that to work was to ban private schools and universities. I think, however, that we should be critical of many aspects of public education, especially in America, with its factory model of standardization, teaching to the test, overemphasizing STEM while cutting arts, early child reading, etc.

@desertsand8778 America's system is rather broken, for a number of reasons, one of which is precisely competition with private schools. If you want to see public education done well, you have to look at other countries, like Finland with its comprehensive model.

@moebiusjdx7288 I think spending is an issue, but I don't think it can be reduced to that without looking at how that money is spent, which reflects material and ideological priorities. There are a lot of factors. We could do a lot with the budget we have if we reoriented the function and focus of education. I gave Finland as an example. They spend 13k per student on average. In the US, we spend about 12k. It's a difference, for sure, and there are significant regional disparities, but it's not a massive difference.

@desertsand8778 Are you saying that because you've done research on this topic or because you're assuming it should work out that way? Because it doesn't. Finland's education system only saw massive improvements after they banned private schools and reformed. The emphasis on public education meant that even children from poorer families received the same high quality education and services as their wealthier peers, and this has proven to be beneficial to society as a whole. In a competitive education market, people who can't pay for quality education don't. They pay for schools that have lower standards, teachers with little to no training, substandard facilities, and a lack of services to help disadvantaged children. The result is lower educational outcomes for that child simply because its parents were too poor to afford better, and lower educational outcomes means that child has a lower chance of having a higher standard of living than its parents, which is a loss for society as much as for the individual.

Why are libertarians so historically illiterate? We've tried having privatized fire departments and police. They don't work. They're inefficient, and often corrupt, predatory, insurance scams that became delegitimized in the eyes of citizens. That's what I think we should keep in mind about libertarians. They profess to ground their "free" social relations on the contract, but in reality their entire conception hinges on a special, corrosive form of contract: insurance. Libertarianism is utopia for insurers.

I think a problem with Sam's line of argument in these situations is that he conflates any kind of authority with government and government with the state. Which, for the purposes of debating libertarians I guess I understand, but it seems like a weaker point overall.
