A lot of times they call in and say the other libertarians did a poor job of explaining it. They'll do it better. It's an ego trip.

Ugh. Sam is being so dense on this issue. He plays at being left until he argues with an ancap and then he just sounds like a head in the sand centrist. There are studies of people in the modern world living in absence of the government. There's Barclay's book "People Without Government," Scott's "The Art of Not Being Governed" which analyzes societies in Southeast Asia, or Graeber's anthropological work on Madagascar.

@robinsss That's one thing that never gets addressed in any of these debates where government is assumed to be coterminous with the state. Sam then gets into what seems like an is/ought argument wherein the state as it is now (and there are many other examples of the state form) represents any possible manifestation of complex, industrial society. But government or governance is not the same as the state and its activities; even anarchists like Malatesta referred to the organization of human activity as government. Edit: I didn't see your second reply. Wow. I actually want you to call in to the show. I don't care how obtuse I think Sam is on this topic; the entertainment value of you arguing ownership of septic tanks as a standard of ancap society with him would just be too good.

@jingleball2427 He didn't make that argument. Maybe I misheard, but it sounded like he made the exact opposite. The caller gave an example, granted a rather poor example, of some of his friends living off the grid. Sam then refuted that example. I don't think his refutation was entirely germane, but it made some fair points. He then made a quip about there being government in China.
