There is no standard way to measure what middle class is, and so many people see it as an aspirational term. In a recent interview with CBS, Warren implied that her taxes would only affect billionaires, meaning middle class extended to everyone beneath that lofty threshold. She likely misspoke, but her statement does speak to the mythology of the middle class, which increasingly stands in rhetorically and ideologically for the largely white professional-managerial class whose interests more closely align with established power and bosses than with the working class.
