  1. I think I picked this up from Ben Burgis in some form. First ask your normie friend, If we could reduce the functions and responsibilities of the police while keeping people as safe or safer and providing similar or better social outcomes, should we do it? If they answer yes, you can have a conversation about defunding police. If they say no, there's probably nothing you can say at that moment that will change their mind. It's almost impossible to have a fruitful conversation when you both have conflicting commitments. You first have to get them to question whether that commitment - eg police serve a valuable and irreplaceable disciplinary role in society - is worth holding.
