I think Zaid Jilani put it well: “To Gabbard, the fact that Syria and Iraq have been through years of brutal civil war, wrecked economies and massive displacement is irrelevant; the only reason they have an extremism problem is because of Islamic theology.” I would hardly call Gabbard a pacifist. While this bill is a good common sense piece of legislation, I doubt it would be applied rigorously (no more arms deals for Israel). Gabbard not long ago voted for the act that would have made it even harder for Syrian refugees to enter the US. She may not like intervention, but she doesn't seem all that interested in the humanitarian dimension, nor is she all that opposed to supporting occupation. There was also her ridiculous comment a week or so ago about how people are discriminating against Mattis and Trump's other military picks because they're veterans. Stuff like that makes me feel a lukewarm about her—but we'll see.
