We should make a federal minimum wage, but have exceptions or a different set of standards for businesses with fewer than X number of workers. I don't see why a multi-billion dollar company has to pay workers in Georgia differently from workers in metropolitan California. The federal minimum wage provides a level playing field for all workers, who can then continue to fight on the state level for higher wages according to need. Your point about automation is important. You go back and read the early socialist thinkers and dreamers and automation is regarded as humanity's savior from needless toil, the liberator of human intellect and energy from tedium. But under capitalism, there is no provision for workers in an automated economy; only profit for the capitalists who own the machines. The real fight against the encroachment of automation is a fight against capitalism, so that we can put automation and technology toward human and ecological needs rather than the spoliation of the land and impoverishment of the masses.
