Research shows otherwise. Spanking is associated with long term negative cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Jimmy makes the most logical point: if it's wrong to assault an adult, who can theoretically defend themselves, how can it be okay to assault a defenseless child? The confusing thing, especially for children, who are constantly unconsciously trying to figure out and apply social rules, is that we tell them that violence doesn't solve anything and then proceed to inflict violence upon them in order to remedy their inconvenient behavior. Spanking is lazy. It doesn't require any thought or understanding of how to make the child a better person.

Cannabliss Reviews Actually I think violence rarely solves anything. What did the Charlotte riots accomplish? I can't think of anything concrete. Now take the case of a child. Violence may shut them up for a while, but what are the consequences? Increased aggression, deterioration of trust, and a failure to learn positive behavior. The last point is important. If the parent's answer to bad behavior is to beat the kid, the kid only learns not to behave a certain way around authority figures. She does not learn how to actually behave, how to regulate her emotions, become more responsible, etc. And I wasn't talking about a research study here or there; I'm talking about meta-analyses. I'm sure you heard about the one published this year. http://psycnet.apa.org/?&fa=main.doiLanding&doi=10.1037/fam0000191

I'm just curious, what do you think is an age appropriate explanation of branding?
