The US consistently ranks near the bottom of democratic states when it comes to voter turnout, with something like 50% for the last few decades. Many people feel disenfranchised and ignored by the political system. The typical answer to that problem is to hold registration and ad campaigns (Get Out the Vote, Vote or Die, etc.), but Sanders' solution was to give people something to vote for. What's so hard to understand about that?
