To think that Bernie is a communist (even though he said in a debate with Clinton that he supports capitalism and advocates for political revolution/reform instead of social revolution) only indicates the extreme degree to which this country has been so overtaken by the right and has assimilated into its consciousness the opinions of the corporate and business class, a group, as one early critic of capitalism observed, "whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it." Far from being the herald of communism (or, indeed, even of socialism), Sanders more resembles a figure like FDR, whose accomplishment was "to save capitalism from itself," that is, a progressive reformer of capitalism.

  2. Obama was one of the more tolerable Republican presidents we've had of late. Why might someone call Obama an "extremist"? The Wall Street bailout. The drone assassination program. Regime change in Libya. Discussions of cutting Social Security for the "Grand Bargain" (a move Eisenhower called "stupid" and, were it to reify, likely to destroy the viability of that party). What else? The literally unprecedented scope of his legal actions against reporters and whistleblowers.  The fact that any of these things are not just tolerated, but ignored in order to praise Obama's great "legacy," speaks to the obscene slant of modern American politics.

  3. It's worth bearing in mind that we don't know who would have won in a Trump-Sanders matchup, though polling can give us some indications to favor the latter. However, we do know that Trump, in his usual bumptious fashion, challenged Bernie to debate, and then backed out at the last minute, like the 6-foot bitch that he is.

  4. He was not only popular with college kids, and he currently has around 70-80% support from Democrats in general. Perhaps people in college turn out less because they don't have someone to turn out for. It's also possible that we need to reconsider our approach to teaching kids about government and politics. There are some indications that lowering the voting age to 16 may lead to higher voter participation, but this would have to be accompanied with adequate education. In general, it shouldn't be surprising that people are more involved when they have a stake in the direction of their society, rather than be allowed to lapse into apathy.

Second, if you knew anything about Spain's modern history, it's clear what event I'm referring to regarding the preference of Anarchy over Fascism and (Bolshevik) Communism. I specify Bolshevik because for a lot of communists, including Marx, anarchy and communism were practically synonyms. I'm also reluctant to equate capitalism with democracy, as so many laissez-faire economists do. In America alone, the periods of greatest capitalist growth oversaw the steepest decline in democratic institutions and equality. I'd add our own period to that list.
