Or, maybe, just maybe, that we should take a holistic approach to change rather than thinking A policy choice will fix what are complicated, interconnected issues. Like education—it's a vector for so many problems in the country, including housing, jobs, food security, healthcare. Finland has successful schools in part because it has more successful institutions built around those schools while in America, schools have to shoulder the burden of teaching, feeding, clothing, and providing other assistance to children And yet so often the retort to "Finland does X" is another punitive, draconian, means-tested policy that we already know won't work. More No Child Left Behind, ESSA, teacher accountability, 1st grader coding, etc. Sometimes we can do the things a country like Finland does—for instance, developmentally appropriate, integral education—and have it still be worthwhile. The idea isn't that we should do one thing one country does but to enact many reforms which build strong social programs.
