Maybe the problem is with the concept of needing 300 miles of range. When's the last time you drove 300 miles nonstop? Most people make 30 mile trips, one way. A car that had a range of 120 miles would be perfectly fine for most people most of the time. I doubt hydrogen is going to take off as a viable alternative, but the range argument seems to be grounded more in the prejudices of previous technology rather than in what consumers need. I think that fixation on creating an ICE car that doesn't have an ICE is part of the problem with thinking about transportation. The climate crisis has afforded us a (fraught) chance to rethink transportation, move to cleaner mass transit, declutter city centers of traffic and noise and pollution (metal particles, microplastics), but instead we're devoting our energy to almost literally reinventing the wheel—to make the closest thing to a gas car that doesn't run on gas.
