  1. I find it hard to believe that Orwell parodied Marx's phrase with "All animals are equal." For one, Orwell wasn't an idiot, and he was capable of reading The Critique of the Gotha Program and noticing that in the same section in which "To each..." appears, Marx explicitly states that equality makes no sense as a political goal. Every person is differently endowed and has different wants and needs, hence "to each according to his [sic] need." If anything, "All animals are equal" sounds much more like the Declaration of Independence, "All men are created equal."
