That's because all the good things he did had a pragmatic benefit that helped him and France, like talked about in this episode respecting the locals religion and not contradicting them was less about being kind to them and more about trying to reduce the chance of retaliation from the locals and keeping them passive towards his invasions; the more people who liked your policies the less chance of a rebellion and the more people you could call on to help fight anyone who does rebel. Him wanting to re-enslave Hattie was not because he was a racists but because slavery was profitable and the money generated by Hattie could benefit France.

I know you guys mention the oar slaves to emphasize that neither side was good, but during that time everyone used slaves; so while by modern standards that's bad I think it pointless to mention it like this. Think of it like this, 100 years from now people will likely look back on the meat industry with similar distain to slavery once lab grown meat becomes the norm, but that doesn't mean all the people of our time who owned and ran cattle ranches or those who ate animal meat are bad people; this is just the norm right now.
