I never understand the point of buffer zones, if your enemy wants to invade you they will either come by sea or simply March through the buffer state to get to you threatening the buffer state with attack if they try to get in the way. I'd rather not have any buffer states because I can control what goes on at the border and see directly what my enemy is doing on the other side, plus taxes and resources from the territory that would have been a buffer state.
