Mali should simply take over the mining operations and nationalize all the assets needed to mine the gold as a form of compensation for all the years of the companies screwing them.

@DegreesOfThree Venezuela refused to reinvest in its oil drilling operations and that's why their economy tanked, they didn't have the infrastructure to access the oil under their feet.

@redcrown5070 so letting corrupt companies exploit Mali is better than corrupt leaders exploiting Mali? Yes corruption is a problem but I'd rather the people who actually live there run the mines and not some corporate colony stripping them of all their wealth.

@DegreesOfThree Everyone could be doing it so long as they pay people to teach them to do it in gold or oil, How do you think oil and gold mining propagated from the 1st people who started doing it. On top of that Mali's been mining gold since the Roman Empire

@DegreesOfThree then by that logic the government can do it too as they would have appropriated all the energy and resources they need from the two timing company, any future investments can be paid for with either the current revenue from gold mining or by promising a share of the future profits generated from for a period of time. It's better for Mali to keep that gold wealth in their borders even if it's lost to local corruption rather than for the wealth to be stolen by a company that does everything it can to pay as little as possible, which aids in keeping the local Mali people poor.
