"The Confederacy wasn't defending slavery it was defending each state's right to determine whether or not it wanted slavery" Ok, but but that would mean you fought a bloody war not to protect slavery but to give States the options to use slavery. If a state didn't want slavery there would have been no point in fighting in the civil war on the side of the confederacy, and if a state did want slavery then whether or not they were fighting for the right to the option or not the outcome would have been the same. The secessionists dealt themselves a nonsensical catch-22 there
