Both were right, Humanity will always find ways through technology and wits to expand the resources needed to sustain a growing population; but even that hits a bottleneck. You can expand the amount of food but you cannot expand the amount of resources needed to sustain crops, you can expand access to them but not the resources themselves there is a finite amount of atoms in the universe and you can make 3d printers to mix and match them into different elements that feed crops while scouring the universe for new deposits to fuel those elemental 3d printers; but eventually there will be more people than food as we reach the peek of technology and expansion in the far future and then the issue goes back to being an issue of resources and not ingenuity. Bears face famines because they cant build farms or raise cattle, they can only forage and hunt; and people in less developed countries face famine because they don't have the wealth and resources to expand their agriculture or simply import more food. There will be a species wide overpopulation issue, it just won't be for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years or even later than that.
