@mSparks43 Ukraine has corruption issues, but is a democracy nonetheless. It is also sovereign - a country recognized by all members of the UN. Call this by its name: Russian aggression.

Russian ships have been blocking Ukraine's sea access and pounding their coastline when they could. And now that they are attacked, the dictator in the Kremlin does not allow a sovereign country to sell its goods anymore in the market and you support that? That's a sad victim blaming game. Also, are not bullies supposed to take any punches back?

@mSparks43 Russia seized Crimea and kept the Donbass on fire since 2014. Ukraine wanted its territory back, and especially an end to the Donbass conflict. Russia ofc was never to return Crimea. Putin also wanted no peace in the Donbass, because that's how he managed to keep Ukraine weak. What's the deal with the nuclear weapons here? They never asked that Moscow be nuked.

@ruthlesstruth8639 What bs lol. Ukraine has not got any far right political representation in parliament and its Jewish president leads an independent party. Keep lying.

@ruthlesstruth8639 Russia steals Crimea, Donbass, Kherson and other regions from Ukraine because it is an imperialist country* - there, fixed it for you.

@mSparks43 False. They said that they wanted to be a part of NATO, not that they wanted nukes stationed in their own country. Also, a diplomat - not the gov of Ukraine - suggested that if NATO accession was not an option, Ukraine may pursue nuclear weapons to safeguard its sovereignty. This comment came in 2021 after the Crimean peninsula and a large chunk of the Donbass had been seized by Russia/pro Russian and Russian propped separatists. Of course, they kept pushing. It also came after the signing of the Budapest Memorandum in the 90s - remember how Russia got back 3,000 nuclear warheads from Ukraine and promised to respect their territorial integrity backed in the day? What do you expect from countries that are being invaded? That they shrug and take whatever comes? Crimea. Donbass. Kherson and the south east. An attempted but colossal failure at seizing Kyiv. Enough is enough. Ukrainians never threatened Russia. Ukrainians did not want to join NATO prior to 2014. Ukrainians wanted peace with Russia. All they have gotten in return for the past 8 years has been theft, death and destruction.

@ruthlesstruth8639 Vatniks and whataboutisms, you can't have the one without the other.

@mSparks43 It is a clear example of whataboutism. Stick to the point. Ukraine has a right to exercise its sovereignty over its territory and to have its territorial integrity upheld. These are the two most basic principles in the UN charter when it comes to IR. Russia is not respecting any of that. What happens in the territory of Ukraine domestically is not exclusively, but predominantly Ukraine's business. As a member of the security council, Russia has avenues to raise concerns about whatever they are worried about. But of course, it is not Ukraine's linguistic policies that are crucial here (which may be problematic in some respect, but which pale in comparison to what the Russians did in Chechnya, and we did not destroy Russia for it). The Russian elites care about its imperial ambitions, not about the residents of the Donbass and their language related concerns. They just use the diaspora as an instrument to advance their own geopolitical goals.

@mSparks43 Ukraine did not choose to go to war with Russia. Russia unilaterally declared war against Ukraine to continue to destroy any traces of Ukrainianness. An independent Ukraine that is not pounded daily does not need help from others. They can manage on their own, they don't need to beg. But in the situation that they find themselves in, considering that they are a much smaller country holding onto dear life, they need assistance. Is this the world that we want to live in? Where large countries can pillage and destroy smaller, sovereign nations just because they are not as strong? Are we back in the 1800s? Should we start, say, retaking cape vert, Bermuda, Senegal just because they are not as militarily powerful as we are? No. Screw that mentality, and screw Russia and its aggression.

@ruthlesstruth8639 Obviously not, are you dense?

@ruthlesstruth8639 How many brain cells do you have?

@mSparks43 I am European and what happened in Iraq is a different business. Iraq was a disaster that I abhor, but I am not responsible for that, nor is my country. Whataboutisms don't cut it for me. We are talking Ukraine, not Georgia or Iraq. Because, oh, it turns out that Russia's hands are also bloody, and it's not just the blood of Ukrainians.

@ruthlesstruth8639 That's the most terrible argument that I have heard in quite a while, congrats! 😂

@mSparks43 Again, look at the actual data. Ukrainians did not want to be in NATO prior to Russia's aggression in 2014 (polls everywhere). It is likely that the country would not have joined for a number of reasons. And even if Ukraine had ultimately joined NATO for extra security guarantees (see what happened in Georgia, Moldova), Russia should not have had a said in that. Under international law, sovereign nations are free to join whatever security alliances they want. Who am I to tell Russia not to accept Pakistan into the CSTO if both parties consent? If you think this is about NATO, you are kidding yourself. No one in NATO wants to touch an inch of Russia - and alsonuclear weapons changed the rules of the game. Just look at the ceremony that Putin held in Moscow recently to celebrate that they had seized several Ukrainian oblasts. Did you hear a word about NATO? Did you hear anything along the lines of 'this makes us safer'? Nah. It was all about the 'greatness of the Russian nation' and 'reclaiming what's theirs.' Why is Russia entitled to do whatever it wants in Ukraine? Ukraine is not Russia. Period.

@mSparks43 Again, look at the facts on the ground. Remind me. Who is invading Ukraine? Who is destroying Ukraine? Who is preventing Ukraine, once again, from selling its grain in international markets? Who is seizing Ukrainian territory? Whose bombs are killing Ukrainians of all walks of life? Who is destroying Ukraine's critical infrastructure? Whose soldiers are committing war crimes in Ukraine? Whose military actions are responsible for the displacement of millions of people? Give me a break pal, really. This US is responsible for all the ills of the world narrative is not only short-sighted, it is also an insult to the Russians themselves. The Russian political class decided as an entity to get embroiled in this situation. Russian officials are ordering their troops to march into Ukrainian territory. Putin is ordering its minions to continue to pound Ukraine. Recruitment officers are ordering Russian citizens to show up at their recruitment stations so that they are sent to the frontline. This is Russia's doing. Iraq was the US' mess. The destruction of Ukraine is Russia's doing. And it needs to stop. Screw their imperialist mentality. This is my last message in this thread. I am appalled that people can support Russia's actions in Ukraine. Jesus.
