This is not separatism but a land grab by a third party. Article 2 (4) of the UN charter: member states must "refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the UN"

The two faces of Russia: (a) "We are always the victim, stop what you are doing, we are being treated unfairly" and (b) "We do this because we can, to hell with international law, you are weak and I am not because I have nukes." - Examine the situation and go for a narrative that fits (a) or (b).

1) Russia is not a great world power, it is a pariah of a state in decline. 2) Those actions are vomit inducing and reprehensible.
