  1. The main objective of pair programming is not mentorship, it is instant feedback and live code review. Mentorship is a side effect, if you pair up a "senior" and a "junior" together. Another side effect is knowledge sharing and improving collaboration. Of course, pair programming does not have to be done all the time, and trivial problems could be done individually or a mix of both. Being dogmatic about it and saying "never" or "always" is not a smart choice.

  2. Just say it: management thinks that pair programming is losing them money, so that is why there's so much push back.
