"You cannot escape waterfall" - The problem is the timeframe and the false assumptions around designing large systems upfront (one of them is assuming that your design is correct without testing it out and another is that it will rarely change, just to name a few). When you make that timeframe smaller (not months, but days) you get feedback faster, you can improve and evolve in better directions and when you do a mistake (not "if" - you will do mistakes), you can fix and learn faster.
