I am a contractor and will dismiss any postings or offers where it doesn't state a range or the interviewer does not respond flat out on what the range is. It means they either are incompetent and simply don't know (highly improbable), or they are trying to lowball you and profit off of people who do not have a very good market knowledge on what the ranges should be.

They were lying or incompetent. Either way, it was a waste of your time.

That's just victimizing yourself. You should do your homework a little more about what you should ask depending on your experience and field of work. If you ask less than the actual average or expected limits of some position, the employer will be happy to give you less. Also, knowing what money you should be getting for the job helps you filter out bad jobs.

State the number you want and then don't waste time with people who are trying to low ball you. Also, do some research on what a realistic range would be for your desired position and choose the upper limit. They will 9 out 10 times try to negotiate DOWN, so you're not doing yourself any favors if do otherwise.

@kei2142 Never tell them what you are currently making. That's your business. Tell them what you want.
