I remember an interview with the skipper of the sailboat they rescued, he said the sight of her coming thru the mist to their rescue was the most surreal moment of his life. All they knew prior was that a ship named Goteborg was coming for them. She's a beauty, that's for sure.

You beat me to it, sir.

Nice of you to donate your time Drach, I'm sure the trust appreciates it. Also, very generous of the subscriber, that's a huge donation.

@MultiZirkon No need, forging hammers that size are still in daily use the world over.
20
@nk_3332 Probably still in fine form and all, it's tough stuff. I'd pay very well for a coffee table made from her planking.
13
I'm a bit torn about permanently putting her on the hard. I'd much rather see her docked, cleaned, repaired and given a coat of epoxy under the waterline so she can go back. Ships need to be in water, it's not the same to see one on the hard.

@Socucius Ergalla Best routers money can buy no less.
11
Vastly underrated comment.
9
How incredibly great is it that against all odds we still have her with us today? That is seriously cool and now I need to go to Chile.

Haunted by the ghost of the Kamchatka :D

Back when honour was a real thing.
7
@skyden24195 Well, she learned to drive during WW2 when she served in the army as a truck mechanic(there are some wonderful photos about) so she was certainly a good driver when still able to do so. No doubt she knew exactly what she was doing to the chap and that's why it happened.
7
@gneisenau89 Thanks, I've just ordered the book.
6
Na, they reload them, it uses a standard screw in Bofors primer and a change of F grade (course) black powder. Also, it sends the bomb sniffers (both electronic and four legged) nuts. I fly a lot after doing special effects and fireworks shows and it pays to keep all your paperwork and licenses handy.
6
@AudieHolland And it helped the families as the pensions would be higher.
5
Happiest creatures on earth.
5
@RedRocket4000 As I say above, it was pretty much treason in my mind.
5
That's the stuff of nightmares. I've seen what steam at 1/5th of that pressure can do, 1200 PSI is just insane.
5
Did you make it to Greenhill Fort on Thursday Island? By far the best view from any battery in Australia. If you didn't, I can send you some photos.
4
@MrDgwphotos I would assume there is a cutout for the action stations one as well, the locals would (understandably) get a bit tired of hearing that 40 times a day.
4
She has a wonderfully dry sendse of humour does HRH.
4
Perth is the fly capital of Australia.
3
I'm still annoyed that I was up in the Torres Strait the week you were in town. Diamantina is pronounced Diamon (diamond minus the last D) teena, the first a being a soft a. Maryborough is Mare a burra
3
@garyreed6237 Ignore him, he's just a rude, ignorant troll.
3
There is a book on the squadron called The Fleet That Had to Die that details the voyage quite well, it was, well, one big clusterfuck from start to its inglorious finish in the Sea of Japan.
3
Holy cow, that must be spectacular! Built out of the correct timbers no doubt as well.
3
@mkaustralia7136 Also acceptable, anything but whatever that was out of Drach's mouth, LOL.
2
Yes, because it is.
2
@francoistombe Yes but those subs were all armed with the MK XIV, the most useless torpedo ever issued anywhere. So bad in fact that something like 10% of hits actually went bang instead of bonk. Even more exploded early or simply headed or the bottom or even worse, the sub that fired them.
2
AB Just Nuisance is a freaking legend in his own right andDrach has a story on him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TCK1Rrkbww He also has a Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Nuisance
2
@renaissanceman7145 You are thinking of CO not CO2, CO2 isn't water-soluble (unless under pressure like carbonated drinks) and isn't poisonous.
2
@yes_head Yeah, some of those audio guides are pretty crappy. Not all by any means but some.
2
If you made this story up it would be rejected by publishers as too unbelievable. Well told sir.
2
Too big, too much recoil for a retrofitment.
2
Yes, this is supposed to be the inspiration for a rather famous scene featuring that chap.
2
I have one on backorder that is now in stock in Japan, quite looking forward to building it. Ironically enough, it looks like my Kamchatka kit will be in the same shipment 🤣
2
TBH they probably are. @paulholmes672

He was simply setting his chickens free, Merle Haggard would be proud.
1
Indeed, an incredible honour, one of those lifelong memories for sure. And to afterwards sign her gunner's book, equally special.
1
Certain people at B-Ord should have hung for what they did.
1
Mate, that's a cheap watch.
1
They are highly effective but the enemy has to come to you and they are not always that cooperative. They do their job by keeping ships away but when they do get targets they can cause havoc. Witness the mess the Norwegian battery made of the German fleet sent to occupy Oslo, even with less than ideal conditions (no warning, bad orders) they sunk a modern battlecruiser (the Bluecher) and others. @rashkavar
1
@roadhound101 He's a fascist mate, obviously. Either that or just a troll.
1
@Drachinifel I can't watch those early ones, the AI voice annoys me too much. Same reason I can't watch the "Dark _ _ _ _ " series of channels.
1
Excellent piece of story telling that was. It's a shame the Scharnhorst is no longer with us, she and her sister were the pinnacle of battle cruiserr design.
1
@dovetonsturdee7033 That pretty much defines a German battlecruiser of WW2.
1
There may have been rampant incompetence and lack of training but the Russians certainly did not suffer from a lack of bravery.
1
32:30 I don't think the Stord had 420mm guns somehow as that's a tad over gunned for a destroyer. Punctuation is rather important old boy. The Scharnhorst was a superb warship, great design and well found. Had there been a dozen of her instead of 2 the surface naval war may well have gone somewhat differently.
1
@charlesgruber1631 That and Butterfly Ball were the pinnacle of concept albums, I still have both on vinyl.
1
Wow, what an honour! You are a fortunate man. Great video mate.
