Fossil fuels are heavily subsidised through the Tax system in the UK over the next 2 years the energy Companies will make 170 billion in EXCESS profits enough to make the current grid up to 70% renewable I'd also add that in the UK as well as the US the grid needs updating its old and in the wrong place and power stations are old and need replacing at this point in time Onshore and Offshore wind is the cheapest form of electricity on the grid in the UK by a considerable margin (Nuclear is double)
