  1. If you have more parties you'll get the Republicans in for life, the centre and left have always had to coexist to drive the political agenda. Conservative bottom is 30% going up to mid 40's and the vote for representatives is not proportional in a first past the post system with multiple parties 30's can easily get a win. The GOP could have split with the rise of the Tea party but it didn't it adopted a more hard right stance to placate them.

  2. There's suggestions on here about an alternate party instead of all coexisting in the Democratic tent. Elections are decided on a first past the post system, the Republican party could have split with the rise of the Tea party but it didn't they were absorbed and the party moved hard right. If you look at the UK where the vote is split between a number of centre left / left leaning parties the Conservatives have a huge majority with 40% of the vote the other parties combined are therefore in the majority but have no say. If I were in the GOP I'd really like the centre and left to split it would tilt the balance to Republican control for the foreseeable future, just saying Really enjoy your show David
