  1. These schoolbook economics take no account at all of black market activity - a permanent and integrated element in Russian financial affairs. More goes on off the books than on them. Russia can sell all the gas and oil it wants to China, India and beyond -and do it through reciprocated "money off" deals that are beyond the understanding of we buttoned-up. law-abiding Western shopkeepers. Inflation in Russia is running at around the same as in Europe, but is expected to drop to 5% within a few months. The supermarket shelves are fuller than in the UK and employment is at a virtually all-time high. It looks to me as though Russia is winning the economic war as well as the shooting war in Ukraine.
