  1. Macron's attitude towards Russia was always rather patronising. If the invasion of Ukraine shocked him it was only because it made him realise that Russia is still in the business of backing up its territorial claims in Europe with military force when necessary. I think too he must have been shocked by the groundswell of public opinion in favour of "poor little Ukraine", however irrational and misguided this has been.
