She was, in fact, a restaurant proprietor who may have occasionally given away some tablecloths to be used as bandages. To her credit, her own memoir of her experiences in the Crimean War makes no claims to anything other than providing lemonade and cakes to the soldiers of all nations involved. In the same way that Guy has been demonised by the race relations industry, this black woman has been elevated to a sainthood which she herself never laid any claim to.
