  1. Francis Drake actually provides an object lesson in anti-racism. He started out as a slaver, sure, but he teamed up with a gang of runaway slaves in Panama who helped him fight the Spanish. He appears to have realised then that black people were not inferior at all since several of them joined his crew as free men and from that point on he offered freedom to any slaves he captured, often setting them ashore wherever they liked. This is the true lesson: we are all instinctively racist. It is an evolutionary imperative for adults to be suspicious of strangers who look different. Discarding such notions in a common cause is a mark of a civilised human being. Get that story on the bloody plaque!
