I've just had a wicked thought, of which I am deeply ashamed. What if Omicron only infects the vaccinated? It's entirely possible, and as far as I can gather in a continent with a mere 6% vaccination rate all cases have been among vaccinated people in southern countries.

@Nick7901962 According to one of the the widely circulated interviews with Dr Angelique Coetzee, who notified the first cases, this is so. There may be nothing to it of course, but the European cases all appear to come into the same category: mostly having travelled in planes where of course full vaccination is mandatory. It wouldn't in fact be surprising. Viruses evolve very rapidly and those which circumvent obstacles are obviously the ones which survive. Delta evolved to get round lockdowns. It is entirely possible that Omicron has evolved to bypass vaccines.

@Nick7901962 As has been pointed out to you it was not a claim but an observation of an apparent fact: ie so far all cases in S Africa have been among the vaccinated. The observation was made by Dr Coetzee and we must wait to see if any cases of Omicron occur in the unvaccinated.

@Nick7901962 I'm basing it on the tiny handful of cases we know about so far. Since that number is likely to increase by several million over the next few weeks perhaps we will be able to make a clearer judgement by then.
