The current UK death rate is around 17% above the five year average for the time of year. Less than half can be attributed directly to covid. Covid will go away, more or less, but these other deaths - caused by lockdowns - will continue to mount year by year.

It's already happening. More than half of excess deaths now are due to non-covid causes.

The UK death rate is currently about 17% above the five year average for the time of year. Covid deaths account for only about half of this number.

Similar demographics, just on a smaller scale.

A degree of genetic immunity due to exposure to historic pandemics which did not reach Europe must be a factor in Asia's performance, I think. Also it is very odd that in Africa the countries where malaria is endemic have had among the lowest death rates in the world. The mistake we will make the next time around is the same one we made this time: to have a "plan" in place which does not recognise the unique nature of each pandemic.

@alboy4 Mainly because both countries have a relatively large number of very elderly people who have escaped influenza for a few seasons. It is predominantly these people who have died.

@garypowell1540 No they are not. This one is very selective in whom it kills. We planned for a universal pandemic, killing old and young alike, as do most influenzas to a considerable degree. This one is even racially selective.
