Of course he's not losing! The control of Donbass is the only issue. Everything else is a sideshow. And right now Russia is doggedly working its way through the Ukrainian defence lines set up post-Minsk while the Ukrainians have not even come within shooting distance of the Russian lines set up at the same time.

@SiliconCurtain Donbass is sitting on trillions of dollarsworth of coal, gas, oil and rare earth minerals. The whole mining industry has been developed, staffed and paid for by Russia over the centuries and Putin is not about to see it sold off to foreign interests. Crimea is so Russian, with a largely Russian population and again Russian-developed industries. He want that too and he wants these territories to be acknowledged as Russian. Odessa - yes. But as long as Russia has some control over its export facilities I doubt it will be worth fighting over. And what does Moldova have to offer particularly? No. Donbass, Crimea and a commitment not to join NATO is all Putin asked for before the invasion. I sincerely believe that once he gets them he will stop, as he did in Georgia and Chechen.

@SiliconCurtain Donbass is sitting on trillions of dollars in gas, coal, oil and rare earth minerals. It is the prize. Putin already has Crimea. He might want Odessa, but I doubt he thinks it worth fighting over. Yes, he might well want to keep the land south of the Dnieper to provide a land corridor to Crimea, but overall this war is about maintaining Russia's position and interests, not extending them.

@SiliconCurtain Donbass with its trillions of dollars in coal, gas, oil and rare earth minerals is the main prize, I think, along with Crimea which is more Russian than Ukrainian, and in fact has very few Ukrainian inhabitants. As long as there is a continued threat of conflict Putin will want to retain the Azov coast in order to provide a land corridor to Crimea. Odessa might be the cherry on the cake, but I see no reason to believe that Putin will expend military resources on taking it. It will be a hard job, but if Ukraine continues to weaken then it might be attempted.

@SiliconCurtain Sadly the insane new YouTube algorithm is refusing to allow me to reply to you, even though I am not saying anything I haven't said before. I might try again later, since the censorship is seemingly quite arbitrary and changes with the wind.

@SiliconCurtain Donbass is sitting on trillions of dollars in coal, gas, oil and rare earth minerals. It is the prize being fought over. There is little chance of Ukraine retaking Crimea, although Russia may well wish to keep the Azov coast in order to have a land bridge to it. Odessa might well be in Putin's sights, but whether it will be worth the trouble of taking it is another matter.

Putin has prevented the new Russia becoming yet another American puppy dog. Whether you think that's good or bad is entirely up to you.
