As things stand Cummings did no wrong - morally or legally.

@sdparsons You're wrong. There are clear provisions for taking sensible steps to secure the welfare of children Which Cummings did.

@gretschmesaboogie He did not break lockdown "rules." There is clear provision for exceptions to be made in the interests of child welfare. There is only one child involved I believe and at 3? years old it was not the infection he was being protected from as much as the traumas visited upon him by the possibility of both his parents being hospitalised and his being taken into care or somesuch. As we understand it his parents kept their distance from his grandparents although -as a grandparent myself - I should not be at all surprised if they were entirely willing to give the child a cuddle and risk the consequences.

@jonm7272 By your reasoning we might all just as well not drive at all. No chance that we might have an accident and inadvertently kill somebody. Better all stay at home in case something bad happens,eh? Forget coronavirus. We're all just disasters waiting to happen to other people.

S.D. Parsons It adds up because the Cummings behaved intelligently, rather than with knee-jerk obedience to slogans. Circumstances alter cases. The Cummings drove for a clear purpose - and one sanctioned by the "general statements" to which you refer. I can see no way in which their behaviour can have added to the possibility of passing on infection over and above any other behaviour they may have chosen. Other than to kill themselves immediately of course -which is the natural extension of the strategies which you and Dr Jon seem to support.

@gretschmesaboogie How in hell do you work that out?

@sdparsons But what if you HAVE to step outside your front door? To ensure your child's safety, for example. What do you do? Risk the possibility of killing others - or kill yourself and your child, thus taking self-isolation to its ultimate extreme? Slogans are merely encapsulations of a notion. "Dig for Victory" doesn't mean keep on digging away until victory comes. It is merely the encapsulation of an idea. "Stay at home " is just a way of saying "Try to say at home as much as possible, but of course you may HAVE to go out from time. We just hope you will take sensible decisions in this regard." A "carefully informed sacrifice" is such a lovely idea. The more I think about it though the more troublesome it appears. Did Cummings make a "carefully informed sacrifice" by risking his career in deciding to take his child up North? Did the single-parent mother make a "carefully informed sacrifice" by isolating herself and her child ? I think she took a slogan literally. He interpreted it.
