So far it's just a bad day or two on the Somme The difference is then the dead were young, active men with much to contribute. The coronavirus victims are generally old or already incapacitated to some degree. As harsh as it sounds the best course of action is to let the illness run its course, keep the emergency hospitals open to deal with those likely to recover and provide what comfort is available for those likely to die. The present strategy seems guided by political expediency and fear of ignorant media censure rather than by anything resembling sound common sense.

@GreatSageSunWukong Care workers are a special case and not enough is being done to support them A shift system and regular testing are needed to protect them from the effects of prolonged exposure and exhaustion.

@GreatSageSunWukong That is sadly true. All we can do is try to lessen the chances. When this over (as we hope it will be) a detailed analysis is needed. Health care workers are obviously at great risk of catching it, but what needs looking into is why a disproportionate number of health care workers are dying. At present the figures are being fudged for political reasons but a likely theory is that multiple infections over a short period reduce resistance. Once again, giving health care workers extended rest periods and regular checks should help prevent this.

@GreatSageSunWukong Exactly so. There have, understandably perhaps, been very muddled responses to this situation. We can only hope lessons will be learned. After all something very similar is bound to happen again. I think I'm right in saying that countries most affected by SARS have done rather better than most, which makes the point. Sweden's gamble seems to be paying off though, but I fear for New Zealand. Total lockdown and strict border controls can surely only mean they will never build up herd immunity.
