The Russians ain't gonna trade a heap of farmland with a bit of iron ore for Donbass.

@ohauss Yeah, but it isn't sitting on $13 trillion dollars of gas, oil, coal and lithium. Everywhere around here has massive historical meaning.

@MacDaddy8200 Is it as much as that? I had no idea.

@Chamieiniibet I don't think it has any particular value other than to supply power to the local area - although I may be wrong about this. There could well be some military target here, but if there was the Russians would surely be defending it. It looks as though the Ukrainians may have hit here simply because it was easy to do so.

I don't think it matters whether Haitians are eating pets in Springfield or not (although it is entirely possible.) What matters is that the whole election debate is now focussed on the topic of immigration. This suits Donald Trump down to the ground.

@SianaGearz Oil and gas will be providing energy till oil and gas run out is a few hundred years time. Sanctions are no match for market forces either. But it is of course rare earth minerals, particularly lithium, which is at the heart of this conflict. Donbass has tonnes of it and everyone wants it. You appear to have fallen for some airy-fairy notions about economics which sound just dandy in the classroom, but which disappear in a puff of smoke when they meet the world of reality.

@SonsOfLorgar Belated thanks for that info. I wonder how well-guarded these facilities are.

@adamnevraumont4027 Here's a prediction for you: some time in the next 20/30 years, or perhaps even sooner, it will gradually be discovered that increased atmospheric carbon does not, in fact, cause increased global warming but merely acts as filtering system. Shock! Horror! AGW is a scam, designed to place artificial value on a product, thus enabling its price to be manipulated. Like any Ponzi scheme the time will come when it will have to crash, but this clever get-out will enable its perpetrators to simply move on to the next con-trick.

This is largely underdefended farmland of no strategic value that I can see. Could this be a sign that the war is ending soon? The only purpose I can immediately think of is that holding this territory will give Ukraine a bargaining chip in any peace negotiations. I can't see Russia detaching troops from the Donetsk front or even Kharkiv in order to try to retake it.
