  12.  @Gypsum179  The Russians currently occupy a good chunk of so-called Ukraine, including vast stretches of coastline and its most highly-developed industrial and coal and steel producing areas. Unlike in Afghanistan, the population generally welcome them, being largely Russian themselves.

  18.  @ldhorricks  Very much so. The Russians have ignored several aspects of received military wisdom. Bombarding civilian infrastructure after a ground invasion instead of before is just one example. It makes it clear that their objective is not the conquest of Ukraine but the depletion of its armed forces in order to better safeguard Russian territories in Crimea and Donbass.

  22. It's looking more and more like an accident as the result of confirmed previous Ukrainian shelling and at least one missile attack. This weakened the structure and weeks of heavy rain added to the pressure and the dam simply gave way. The video purporting to show an dxplosio has been proven to be fraudulent and the noise heard by nearby residents is more in accord with this explanation.

The numbers of deaths among the Ukrainian armed forces and the armies of the Donbass republics is unclear, but can be expected to be more than this. As is well known the total number of deaths in the conflict is over 14,000 most incurred during the first two years of the fighting, when the Ukrainians were in the ascendant.
